About the author

Born on 8 March 1966 in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, Dr. Anil Kumar Jha carries Mithila's cultural memory into his writing. He holds a Master's and a Ph.D. in Sanskrit, along with an LL.B. from Barkatullah University, Bhopal, and practises today as an advocate and legal advisor in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.

Long before his books, he served as editor of Mithila Sanskriti, a monthly magazine devoted to Maithil culture — work that shaped the material for both of his published titles. His writing sits at the meeting point of scripture, ritual and everyday life: dense Vedic literature made legible, and folk customs like the Kohbar tradition read for the meaning they still hold.

His major work. Kohbar takes its name from the decorated chamber where a newly married couple traditionally begins life together — not just a room, but a canvas of symbols: sun, moon and the nine planets, fish, tortoise and serpent, lotus and paired elephants, each standing for fertility, continuity and the union of two families. Drawing on the love of Sita and Rama, of Shiva and Parvati, and of Nala and Damayanti, the book reads the Kohbar wall as a complete philosophy of marriage — one built on dharma, artha, kama and the four ashramas — and asks what is lost as the custom itself fades from Indian homes.
